SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM) EDUCATION
The Foundations believe that America’s strength in the fields of engineering and science enables its capacity to compete globally, enhances its opportunities for innovation, and leads to economic prosperity and a better quality of life for society as a whole.  The Directors have a particular interest in supporting science, technology, engineering, and math education in order to foster a robust and competitive workforce and to develop a STEM-literate populace that understands and appreciates the contributions made by engineering and science to society’s welfare.

The Foundations support organizations to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Early Engagement.  Engage students at an early age (K-8) in STEM learning both in-school and out-of-school, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area.

  3. Parks.  Secure sustained investment in parks and advance promising models of public land stewardship, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  4. Energy.  Support selected science and policy research to illuminate the path to a more secure and sustainable energy future.

Character and Citizenship Development
The Foundations believe that all people are capable of making positive choices and ethical decisions, and of becoming active citizens. For young people, it is critical that they are provided with consistent and sound mentoring, and the encouragement to participate in new learning opportunities to realize their full potential and become responsible and active citizens.  The Directors have a strong interest in programs for young people that build character and programs for the broader public that advance an understanding of, and commitment to, the practice of citizenship.

The Foundations support organizations working to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Youth Character Development.  Increase opportunities for youth in the San Francisco Bay Area to interact with exemplary role models and participate in a variety of worthwhile learning opportunities so that they are able to develop a framework for ethical living.
  2. Citizenship.  Advance a vibrant and productive national conversation about why active citizenship matters and how Americans can cultivate and sustain these values.

Preventive Healthcare and selected research
The Foundations believe that access to quality care, preventive health care and research programs can help individuals of all ages increase life expectancy and improve their quality of life.  The Directors have a particular interest in promoting nutritional health, fitness, and wellness in order to increase positive health outcomes.

The Foundations support organizations working to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Access to Healthcare.  Enable San Francisco Bay Area community clinics and school-based health centers to improve the quality and delivery of medical care.
  2. Nutrition and Fitness.  Enhance and expand school-based efforts in the San Francisco Bay Area that improve the nutritional health and fitness of children.
