[ About ]

The S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation and the Stephen Bechtel Fund (the “Foundations”) support selected non-profit organizations and initiatives that seek to address critical challenges to the economic health and well-being of the United States.  The primary geographic focus is the San Francisco Bay Area where the Foundations can work closely with grantees whose missions and work can serve as models to be replicated in other areas.

In order to achieve significant impact, the Board of Directors has decided to spend-down these family foundations by the end of 2016.  The Foundations will focus on well-managed organizations which create significant sustained benefits, and which work collaboratively with other organizations to deliver comprehensive programs in areas of special interest, as noted below, to the Founder and Directors.

PROGRAM AREAS

The Foundations also provide limited support to selected general education programs, civic institutions and cultural organizations.  The Foundations do not accept unsolicited proposals and do not publish annual reports.  A potential grantee may submit a brief letter of intent (not to exceed two pages) focusing on one or more program areas, as listed above.  The Foundations will review this letter and may then invite a full proposal.  Please note that the Foundations do not provide endowment funding and do not make international grants.
